Whatever it is about a New Year and in this case a New Decade it seems to provoke the need to reevaluate ones’ life and goals.
Kirstie and I spent the Christmas period reflecting on the past decade and asking our selves why there is such a strong draw to consider the next 10 years with such reverence!
I can’t pretend to give a solid scientific answer to those questions however I do know that it is a real thing - but is it helpful! As with all things, I think that largely depends on how you approach the exercise of looking back over the past and planning for the future.
So here are my personal rules for making the most of the New Year Resolution phenomenon...
Rule No.1 - is definitely put things into PERSPECTIVE. The most damaging thing would be to look back over a whole decade and judge yourself too harshly or in comparison to others. We all started from different positions in life and set ourselves wildly different goals so if you are going to review how far you have come then make sure that you only judge yourself against your own expectations.
Rule No.2 - be GRATEFUL. If you are lucky enough to still have the most important things in your life that you had 10 years ago, for me that is family, a business and the excitement to make the most of every day, then you have plenty to be grateful for. Never take the things you hold most dear for granted.
Rule No.3 - LEARN from your lessons. There is no doubt that no one has it all figured out. Mistakes are a necessary part of life. Just make sure that you see them as such and that you can’t grow or learn without them and the chance of success in the future relies on being able to take the positive from any situation.
Hopefully, with these thoughts in mind, you can look back over the last 10 years with a sense of pride and achievement.
But what about the 2020s!
Well, again planning your goals for the next 1 year can seem daunting more or less the next 10!!
From experience, my clear thought is that, while all the advice you will receive from great motivation speakers and life coaches is have goals, it is how you approach them that will determine whether they are useful or a burden.
Rule No.4 - HAPPINESS exists only in the NOW! So as we have spent the last week doing set goals for the next year or 10 but realise that you can only affect what is right in front of you. The great news about this is that now only will it stop the weight of expectation from these goals becoming overwhelming but it will allow you to live in the now and take enjoyment from the small wins that you achieve along the way. If you need some reassurance that everything is going in the right direction, learn about angel numbers and what they can mean regarding the path you are on.
Rule No.5 - EXECUTION is all there is. Once you have committed to the idea in Rule No.4 then all that is left to do is commit to delivering your best efforts and make the most of every day. Aim to make the best decision given the information in front of you and then act with conviction. No one can be 100% sure of the outcome of any action but there is no denying that make a POSITIVE choice committing to it will increase the chance of it being the right choice or at least being able to look back and know you took your chance to smash 2020.
So there you have it. For what it is worth, these are my thoughts on how to take the mix of excitement and expectation of a new decade and turn it to your advantage for a happy and more effective decade!
