Should you wear deodorant to bed?

It’s the debate that has been rocking social media this week, should you wear deodorant to bed? When asking our followers if they do indeed wear deodorant to bed, only 26% of them said they did, with 74% saying that they go without it at night. With people having some very strong views on the matter, naturally, as a deodorant brand we wanted to look into if there is any logic to not wearing deodorant at night, or should you be wearing it constantly.

What is deodorant?

A deodorant is a substance, generally found in balm or stick form, applied to the body to prevent or mask body odour due to a bacterial breakdown of perspiration in the armpits. Deodorant can also be applied to the groin and feet too in extreme cases. However, a deodorant should not be confused with an antiperspirant, which is generally found in aerosol form, that uses aluminium to block your sweat glands in order to prevent yourself from sweating.

When do you apply deodorant?

Generally, people apply deodorant at the start of their day, just before they get dressed or after a shower to feel protected for the rest of the day. However, you can apply deodorant before a workout to feel extra protected, but with good deodorants, you shouldn't have to do this.

Should you wear deodorant to bed?

There has been much debate within the beauty world on whether it's more beneficial to apply deodorant at night rather than in the morning, as perspiration levels are not as high compared to the daytime and usually the deodorising is the most important during the daytime. On the other hand, experts suggest that applying antiperspirant in the evening could mean that your sweat glands would not have time to breathe properly as they will be constantly blocked with aluminium.

The benefits of wearing deodorant to bed

There are several benefits to wearing deodorant to bed, here are just a few:

  • It gives the product more time to sink into your skin.
  • Sweat glands are less active at night, so the product absorbs faster.
  • Deodorant works better on dry skin (as opposed to damp skin after a shower in the morning).

What we suggest

While the argument for applying deodorant at night is a good one, we would not suggest applying antiperspirant at night, there have been many health risks associated with using antiperspirants - so we would always advise on the side of caution. To be honest we wouldn’t advise using them during the day either.

If you don’t sweat at night and are going to wash and or apply deodorant in the morning then there is probably no need at all to use more of your deodorant product. Save it till the morning.

If you do find you tend to sweat at night, or using it makes you happy then do so. When applying a deodorant so often you should make sure it is formulated with natural and organic ingredients that you can trust. Proverb Refillable Natural deodorant uses only vegan and cruelty-free ingredients and no toxic chemicals such as aerosols, SLS, petroleum or synthetic fragrances. The only natural refillable deodorant has 3 different strength levels - Active, for heavy sweating and people who tend to live a more active lifestyle, Core - for those that don't tend to suffer from body odour and have allergies to sodium bicarbonate, and Sensitive - for those with super sensitive armpits and suffer from irritation.

We would love to hear your thoughts on this, do you apply deodorant to go to bed?
