SKINCARE WORLD CUP: THE WINNING INGREDIENTS FOR THAT KILLER SKIN

With the World Cup drawing closer and closer, we thought it would be a good idea to find out which skincare ingredients are in the running to take home the trophy and which should be knocked out in the group stages. So, place your bets now because some of these winning ingredients might just surprise you!

INGREDIENTS ARE IMPORTANT

This should not come as a surprise, but we are all guilty of forgetting the importance of the ingredients that we put on our skin. You wouldn’t start your day by fuelling your body with junk food (at least we hope not) so why would you want to use junk ingredients in your morning grooming routine? Studies show that between 20 - 60% of the products that we use on our skin are absorbed into our bodies, meaning that those harsh chemicals found in the majority of the products you see on the shelves today can be doing way more harm than good. Thanks to our 30+ years experience in the grooming industry we have put together a list of the ultimate ingredients that will unlock your killer skin and make you feel great, just in time for summer.

GO GREEN GROOMING

When looking for grooming products, follow the same rules that you follow for a healthy diet: hunt for unprocessed ingredients, without any harsh chemicals or anything artificial! Essentially, the closer to nature the product is, the more your skin will know what to do with its beneficial ingredients. All the organic ingredients seen on the image below have insane numbers of health and grooming benefits but it’s our final four that we are going to talk about in more detail here.

THE WINNERS

1. COCONUT OIL

Coconut oil is one of nature’s most versatile and healthy ingredients, meaning we had to give it the trophy. It’s benefits include: strengthening and moisturising the skin, removing dead skin cells and helping to prevent and cool sunburn (especially useful going into summer). Coconut oil also has anti-ageing, antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and antioxidant properties. Pretty much all the good stuff...

Using coconut oil on both your skin and hair will help to cleanse and moisturise the skin, heal scratches or scars quicker, prevent shaving rash, and soften hair. Coconut oil is also super beneficial when ingested as it has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory agents, plus it’s packed with healthy fats that keep your body working as it should. So, if your grooming products contain this ingredient then you’re onto a winner!

2. TEA TREE OIL

Tea tree is an essential oil that has been around for hundreds of years and is bagging our second place spot. It’s best known for helping to fight off acne, redness of the skin and inflammation. Additional benefits of the essential oil include working as a natural anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, antimicrobial and anti-fungal ingredient. Another great organic ingredient to watch out for!

3. APPLE CIDER VINEGAR

Apple cider vinegar is an extremely affordable natural ingredient with benefits that include; killing bacteria, clearing skin problems that are caused by gut issues, cleaning the skin and helping to prevent acne. Apple cider vinegar also contains the vitamins potassium and magnesium, which make it a detoxifying agent when consumed, by boosting liver function and balancing bacteria in the gut.

4. RAW HONEY

Raw honey has a heap of beneficial properties, including its moisturising and antiseptic properties, not to mention is smells and tastes great! With raw honey in your grooming products you are pretty much guaranteed clearer and calmer skin. The antiseptic properties of raw honey also help to get rid of scars, allergies and rashes. Honey works as a great homemade organic skincare product because it can be used on all kinds of skin, sensitive or not. In fact, if the sunshine is leaving your skin really dry and noticeably red, we recommend taking a few minutes out of your nighttime routine to do the following. Get half a teaspoon of honey, warm it between your hands and spread it on your face. Leave it on for 10 minutes before rinsing with warm water and patting dry. Trust us, you’ll thank us later.

IT DEGREASES AN ENGINE AND YOU'RE PUTTING IT ON YOUR FACE?!

Yes, you read that right. As you will learn, some surprising ingredients can be found in your skincare routine. So, stop exposing your skin to cheap products and next time you are shopping for your skincare products, take our list of harmful ingredients into consideration. Your skin will be all the better for it.

THE LOSERS

1. PETROLEUM & LIQUID PARAFFIN

They both make up the cheap base products in nearly every non-organic cleanser, shaving foam or moisturiser. By-products of making petrol; they are used because they are cheap, not because they are good for your skin. Much like wrapping your skin in cling film, these chemicals block pores and interfere with the skin's ability to eliminate toxins. They can slow down skin function and cell development resulting in premature ageing. Not. Good.

2. POLYTHYLENE GLYCOL (PEG)

This is a potentially carcinogenic petroleum ingredient that can alter and reduce the skin’s natural moisture. It can increase the appearance of ageing and leave your skin more vulnerable to bacteria. PEG is used in non-organic cleansers to dissolve oil and grease. It is also used in caustic sprayon oven cleaners. One to avoid.

3. SODIUM LAURYL SULPHATE

SLS is used in industrial detergents and surfactants and can have significant health risks. Also used in car washes, garage floor cleaners and engine degreasers - and in 90% of non-organic products that foam. Go and check your foam face wash, shampoo or shaving cream now.

4. OXYBENZONE

Is an ingredient found in many skincare or cosmetic products but primarily in suncream because of its primary function of absorbing UV light. While this sounds great, research has shown that Oxybenzone is also absorbed directly into our bodies and can stay there for an unknown amount of time. The danger of this absorption is that, according to the EWG (a body of toxicology experts), the ingredient has a very high toxicity ranking and it has been linked to hormone disruption and increased damage to skin cells. Meaning that the inclusion of Oxybenzone into your skincare products may be causing the very damage that you are trying to prevent, and can make your skin more prone to serious health issues such as skin cancer.

Check your ingredients against this list, go green with your grooming and unlock your skin’s full potential.
