How we are Saving Plastic with Every Order

After the successful launch of our Refillable Body Wash back in October 2022, we wanted to explain how we as a business and other brands within the beauty sector can become more sustainable with the worlds-first paper, plastic-free and home compostable pouch for liquid. 

Who is Greenspark?

Greenspark is a tech platform that works with brands and consolidates donations then passes them on to much larger charities, such as Plastic Bank. Their tech integrates with our website so that each bottle sold is tracked and the donation taken, making it a smooth and integrated process for the brand and consumer. So far 1.5 million pieces of ocean-bound plastic have been rescued by Greenspark members. 

They offer the brand the ability to remove ocean-bound plastic, plant trees or carbon offset. With our refillable drive, Proverb has chosen to work with ocean-bound plastic. The Proverb donations, via Greenspark, then go to Plastic Bank.

Who is Plastic Bank?

Plastic pollution is among the greatest threats to our oceans and marine life. The United Nations estimates that every year 8 million tonnes of plastic waste ends up in waterways and if we continue to consume and discard single-use plastics at this rate, by 2050 there could be more plastic in our ocean than fish. Plastic Bank® builds ethical recycling ecosystems in coastal communities while creating positive economic opportunities for those who help collect it.

Currently, more than half of plastic produced is designed to be single-use, and less than 9% is recycled. Today, over 5 trillion pieces of plastic litter the ocean. The most famous accumulation of discarded plastic is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, an area of floating plastic pollution approximately three times the size of France. To fight plastic pollution, society must move away from the linear model of “Take, Make, Dispose”, and instead embrace a circular model that recycles and reuses the same resources indefinitely.

Plastic Bank promotes the circular economy by monetising plastic waste. Their collectors receive a premium for the materials they collect which helps them provide basic family necessities. The collected material is reborn as Social Plastic® which can be easily reintegrated into products and packaging as part of a closed-loop supply chain.

Plastic Bank prevents ocean-bound plastics from reaching our waterways and reduces the number of new plastics being created by encouraging companies to switch to recycled sources.

What is happening with ocean-bound plastic?

With every Proverb product sold, we donate money to help fund the work of Plastic Bank through Greenspark. They give us an exact measurement of how many pieces of ocean-bound plastic it will remove, so both Proverb and the customer can measure their personal impact.
