Proverb Skin Is Carbon Positive

At Proverb, we have teamed up with Earthly to remove carbon and restore nature!

Earthly is a platform created to give businesses an effective way to invest in nature: by working out how much carbon the individual business creates yearly and then offsetting this carbon through donations to a project that helps to fight climate change. At Proverb Skin we are offsetting our carbon footprint to help protect the carbon-rich peatland forest of Rimba Raya which would have been turned into a palm oil estate emitting over 100 million tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere.

We are very proud to be supporting this initiative, we believe that it’s our job as businesses to be helping support the planet for future generations. Earthly has calculated our Business Emissions Report: Proverb is now a Climate positive business, going beyond carbon neutral, by offsetting 110% of our carbon emissions.

What Is Carbon Positive

Carbon positive means offsetting more carbon than what has been released. Whereas carbon-neutral means our net greenhouse gas emissions are equal to zero, being carbon positive means going one step further by having additional positive contributions to the environment.

Luke Sherriff, co-founder of Proverb Skin explained the process of offsetting carbon:

“Unfortunately in any business, you will naturally create a carbon footprint, whether its employees driving to work to the cost of computers or even packaging. We knew that although we may only be a small business, we wanted to do our part in the sustainable revolution.”

In 2021-22, Proverb helped the
Kasigau Corridor project, which was not only about protecting the world’s second-largest intact rainforest but also about helping local communities through education and providing vital medical care. This REDD+ project is found in the heart of DRC in the Congo Basin, the second most important rainforest in the world after the Amazon.

Since the project began, it has led to the creation of over 300 jobs; the building of 15 new schools; clean safe drinking water for 25,000 people and the formation of 500 women’s groups.

In 2022-23, Proverb are working to protect the carbon-rich peatland forest of Rimba Raya which would have been turned into a palm oil estate emitting over 100 million tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere. This area of Borneo is one of the most highly endangered ecosystems in the world with 65 endangered animals and plant species, including the orangutan.

How To Be Carbon Positive

Our everyday actions consume energy and produce carbon emissions. By choosing to carbon offset you can compensate for your emissions by funding an equivalent carbon dioxide saving elsewhere.

So how can you offset your carbon footprint? The age-old ‘reduce reuse recycle’ comes to mind, but add one more ‘R’ to your list: refuse. Say no to fast fashion or single-use plastic, along with other unnecessary purchases that contribute to waste. Proverb created a refillable eco-friendly deodorant to help you do just that, and there are plenty of other areas in your life that could be adjusted with little to no effort for massive eco savings. Proverb Skin ethos is ‘get out what you put in’ and the statement rings true in every instance, you get out what you put into helping save the planet.
